The freeze frames and the jump editing when Kanye West is singing/dancing is good technique to consider so there arn't long shots of us singing/dancing.
Also the dark shadows cross his face are really affective and look good.
(Just added a few screen shots about what I mean)
(But defiantly not using them shades though!)

This would be a good compromise, however this video works because the other images are so arresting - therefore it can function with only a few CU shots of the artist. Something to think about - your other shots would need to be very visually exciting...
I like the jumpcut / freezeframe technique - although also notice facial gesture during performance - that kind of performance will also be crucial to add authenticity.
